A 15-year sergeant with the Kane County sheriff’s office was arrested and charged Wednesday with possessing cocaine in February.
Aaron J. Feiza, 44, of the 34W700 block of Hill Court, South Elgin, surrendered at Elgin Branch court Wednesday and posted $1,000 bail on the felony charge of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, according to prosecutors. The arrest alleges Feiza had the cocaine on Feb. 10, 2019.
The Illinois attorney general’s office and the North Central Narcotics Task Force investigated the case and say it is still ongoing.
Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said Feiza, who has worked for the office since Jan. 7, 2004, was immediately placed on paid administrative leave after state police notified Hain in August of the investigation.
“The community expects, as I expect, that law enforcement officers will obey the law. If police fail to meet that expectation, we are obligated to respond accordingly to maintain the public’s trust,” Hain said in a news release issued by the Kane County state’s attorney and Illinois attorney general’s office.
If convicted, Feiza faces a sentence of probation to up to three years in prison.
Attorney David Camic, who is representing Faiza, said his client was fitted with a pacemaker in early January 2019 and his father died later that month.
“It’s unfortunate (Feiza) has been charged,” Camic said. “Without commenting on the facts, I think the mitigation is substantial in this case.”
Feiza is next due in court Dec. 20.
